Income Tax Return Filing Guide

Income Tax Return Filing Guide: a practical, source-aware guide with clear next steps.

What income tax return filing means

Income tax return filing records your earnings, deductions, tax credits, tax paid, and resulting liability or refund in the relevant Income Tax Return (ITR) form. In India, the return connects your records with information held by the Income Tax Department.

Your immediate task is usually reconciliation. Your Form 16 may show salary and Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), while the Annual Information Statement (AIS) includes bank interest, dividends, securities transactions, or other receipts.

Before filing, compare these tax records with Form 26AS, payslips, bank statements, rent records, donation receipts, and broker statements. You must decide whether the records agree and resolve any material difference before selecting and submitting the ITR form.

Financial Year (FY) means the year in which you earn income. Assessment Year (AY) means the following year in which those earnings are assessed through the return.

Always confirm the relevant FY and AY because tax rules, filing utilities, schedules, and ITR form requirements can change.

Filing a return is not the same as paying tax. Filing reports the determination.

TDS and advance tax are credits against the liability. A deduction reduces taxable income when allowed.

An exemption excludes qualifying receipts. A rebate reduces the calculated tax.

A refund returns excess tax already paid.

Treat tax filing as a reconciliation of earnings, claims, credits, and records - not as data entry from Form 16 alone.

The Income Tax Department filing guidance is the primary place to verify which return is relevant. That choice leads to the ITR selection.

How to choose the applicable ITR

The applicable ITR depends on the taxpayer category, income sources, asset disclosures, and other reporting conditions for the relevant tax year. Do not choose an ITR form only because you used it for an earlier return.

ITR-1 and ITR-2 have different reporting structures. ITR-1 may be available only when every eligibility condition is satisfied.

ITR-2 may be relevant when earnings or disclosure requirements fall outside ITR-1, provided business or professional income is not being reported. Other ITR forms apply to other tax profiles.

Start by listing each source instead of estimating which ITR form looks shortest:

  1. Record salary, pension, house-property, interest, dividend, capital-gain, business, professional, foreign, and other income.
  2. Identify jointly held assets and amounts that remain taxable in your hands.
  3. Check whether foreign assets or foreign income make the Foreign Assets (FA) schedule relevant.
  4. Identify brought-forward losses, current losses, or special-rate items.
  5. Match the list against the applicable ITR form conditions published for the AY.
  6. Open the selected ITR form and confirm that every required schedule is available.

Schedule FA is the foreign-assets schedule in the relevant ITR form. Its relevance depends on the taxpayer’s residential status and reportable interests, not merely on whether money was transferred to India.

Verify this tax question using the instructions for the relevant AY before you file.

An ITR utility accepting an entry does not establish that the selected ITR form is correct. You remain responsible for choosing the right ITR, completing the necessary schedules, and providing consistent information.

Choose the ITR form from your complete earnings and disclosure profile, not from habit or convenience.

After selecting the applicable ITR, the next step is to assemble and classify income.

What income must be checked before filing

Income must be checked against your documents, tax statements, and relevant ITR form schedules before filing. AIS and Form 26AS are reconciliation sources, but neither automatically replaces your underlying records.

Review salary using Form 16 and payslips. Review bank earnings using interest certificates and statements.

Review securities transactions using broker records and transaction-level calculations. Review house-property receipts using rent records, ownership information, and relevant loan documents.

Review tax items shown in AIS even when they do not appear in Form 16.

Example: Form 16 shows salary of ₹8,00,000 and TDS of ₹40,000. AIS also shows savings and deposit interest of ₹20,000.

Your records confirm both amounts. The total considered before exemptions or deductions is ₹8,20,000: ₹8,00,000 plus ₹20,000.

The ₹40,000 TDS is a tax credit; it does not reduce the total to ₹7,80,000. The final determination depends on the FY, tax regime, deductions, rebate conditions, and applicable rates.

Now consider a contrasting tax record. AIS shows interest of ₹20,000, but the bank certificate supports ₹12,000 and the remaining ₹8,000 is a duplicate.

Do not copy the duplicated figure merely because it is pre-filled. Retain the bank evidence, report the correct amount in the ITR form, and use the available AIS feedback service where appropriate.

House Rent Allowance (HRA) is an exemption question, not a generic deduction. Donations support a deduction only when the legal conditions and documentation are met.

Keep the donation receipt, qualifying details, payment evidence, and information required by the relevant ITR form schedule. Do not treat every donation as automatically deductible.

Report income from verified records and reconcile differences instead of assuming that pre-filled tax data is complete or conclusive.

Once the amounts are classified, filing becomes a controlled sequence.

What to do during tax filing

Tax filing should proceed through preparation, reconciliation, calculation, validation, submission, and verification. Complete each action in that order so an early mismatch does not flow into the submitted return.

First, gather your Permanent Account Number (PAN), Aadhaar details where relevant, bank information, Form 16, Form 26AS, AIS, tax-payment challans, interest certificates, rent records, donation records, and investment or broker statements. Then confirm the FY, AY, taxpayer category, and applicable ITR form.

Next, classify every income source and complete the related schedule. Enter eligible deduction and exemption details separately.

Reconcile TDS, advance tax, and self-assessment tax credits with government records before you file.

Use the Income Tax Department calculator guidance or its Income and Tax Estimator only as a comparison aid. A calculator output is an estimate.

The completed ITR form, based on the relevant law and verified information, produces the filing determination.

Run the ITR form validation checks and examine the tax summary. A zero validation-error count does not prove that earnings, deductions, schedules, or the ITR selection are correct.

Validation checks structure and consistency. It cannot verify every factual claim.

File the return through the Income Tax Department portal and complete verification using a method available to you. Save the acknowledgement, tax computation, submitted ITR file, and supporting records.

Filing is not operationally complete merely because an ITR was uploaded. If you use a filing service, confirm that it gives you access to these final records.

A sound filing process reconciles the evidence before submission and confirms verification afterward.

The submitted return should then be reviewed as a completed tax record.

What happens after you submit the return

A submitted return must be verified, processed, and monitored for communications or mismatches. Tax filing does not end at the upload confirmation screen.

Check that verification is complete and retain the acknowledgement. Then monitor the return status through the Income Tax Department portal or an authorised service.

Depending on the submitted ITR form and departmental records, processing can produce an intimation, tax demand, refund determination, adjustment, or request requiring attention.

A refund shown in the ITR form is a claimed outcome, not an immediate payment promise. A delayed refund does not by itself establish that the return is defective.

Check the processing status, bank validation, notices, and recorded tax credits separately.

If a tax demand appears, compare the communication with the filed return, Form 26AS, challans, TDS records, and computation. The Income Tax Department’s Demand Management Facilitation Centre may be referenced in departmental communications.

The appropriate response depends on the actual notice and the procedure available for that communication.

A revised return can correct an omission or wrong statement when the law and time conditions permit it. An updated return is a separate statutory route with different conditions and consequences. “Revised” and “updated” are not interchangeable descriptions of the same tax action.

After filing, verify the return, track processing, and respond according to the specific communication shown in your tax account.

If the submitted record contains an error, determine whether and how you can file a correction.

When you may need to file again

You may need to file again when the original return contains an omission, an incorrect statement, or another issue covered by an available correction route. The right route depends on what changed, the AY, the filing status, and the statutory conditions in force.

Common reasons to consider a revised return include omitted bank interest, an incorrect deduction, an incomplete capital-gain schedule, a missed TDS credit, or selection of an inapplicable ITR form. Before you file a revised ITR, identify the original error and rebuild the full computation.

Do not change only the visible tax difference.

Example: The original ITR reports salary of ₹8,00,000 but omits verified interest of ₹20,000. The corrected record is ₹8,20,000 before relevant adjustments.

A revised return should include the interest, recalculate the full determination, retain valid credits, and update every affected schedule.

A contrasting case is a duplicate AIS item unsupported by the bank statement. That discrepancy does not automatically require you to report the duplicated amount.

Use the correct evidence, preserve your reconciliation, and determine whether the already-filed ITR itself contains an error.

An updated return is available only when its conditions are satisfied. It is not a universal substitute for a revised return, and it can carry tax consequences defined by law.

Verify current eligibility, exclusions, timing, and payment requirements through the Income Tax Department or an authorised filing service before proceeding.

File another return only after identifying the error, the applicable correction mechanism, and every schedule affected by the change.

That decision also requires a separate check of the underlying income tax calculation.

How to review the income tax calculation

Review the income tax calculation by tracing each amount from its source document to the relevant ITR form schedule and final computation. This review tests classification, regime choice, claims, credits, and arithmetic as separate matters.

Start with gross income by source. Then check permitted exemptions.

Next, review each deduction against the evidence and eligibility conditions. Calculate taxable income under the selected regime.

Apply the rates and other provisions for the stated FY and AY. Then account for any rebate, surcharge, cess, credit, interest, or fee.

Here is what changes the result: the type and timing of receipts, residential status, taxpayer category, chosen regime where a choice is available, eligible deductions, exemptions, losses, special-rate items, and verified tax credits. Use the same data when comparing regimes so the comparison is meaningful.

Check TDS against Form 26AS and the certificates issued by deductors. A TDS entry is a credit for tax already deducted; it is not a deduction from taxable income.

Similarly, a refund results from eligible credits exceeding the final liability, subject to processing by the Income Tax Department.

Review donations with particular care. A receipt alone does not establish that the deduction is available.

Confirm the donee information, payment method, qualifying amount, limit, and reporting fields required in the ITR form for the relevant AY.

A reliable income tax review follows every number from evidence to schedule, computation, credit, and final result.

The final control is to inspect the selected ITR form line by line before submission or correction.

How to complete the ITR form confidently

Complete the ITR form by matching every income source, disclosure, deduction, and tax credit to its relevant field or schedule. The correct ITR form is the one that can lawfully report your complete facts for the relevant AY.

Before you file, inspect the ITR form in five passes. First, check personal, PAN, Aadhaar, bank, contact, residential-status, and filing-status details.

Second, check each income schedule. Third, check deduction and exemption claims.

Fourth, check TDS and other tax credits. Fifth, check the computation, refund or payable amount, and verification information.

For an ITR-1 filing, confirm that every applicable eligibility condition remains satisfied. For an ITR-2 filing, complete each relevant schedule, including capital-gain or Schedule FA disclosures where required.

Do not leave a required schedule incomplete because a pre-filled value is absent.

Compare the ITR form against AIS, Form 26AS, Form 16, bank records, broker statements, rent documents, donation evidence, and tax challans. Investigate each material difference.

Preserve a short reconciliation note explaining why the return differs from an information statement.

If you use an offline utility or intermediary service, retain the final ITR file and open the completed return before submission. Confirm that imported data, schedules, deduction details, and bank information survived the transfer correctly.

A service can assist with preparation, but it does not determine which ITR is applicable.

Finally, validate the ITR form, review the tax computation, pay any determined amount through the authorised process, file the return, and complete verification. Save the acknowledgement and the version of the ITR file actually submitted.

Your final decision is straightforward: file only after the applicable ITR form matches your complete tax facts, supporting records, and verified credits.
